4 in the morning – a walk in the woods
by Ruth O'Callaghan
The four poets in this anthology, Richard Skellington, Belinda Singleton, Fran McMahon and Felicity Napier, each demonstrate in their own unique way the craft that makes for a finely honed poem. Here we have descriptive poems reminiscent of Edward Thomas, a surreal take on an apparently everyday visit to a baby clinic, hoping for shoes at forty and the hauntingly succinct In Helmand’s fields the poppies know war is folly and mother’s woe. This anthology is simply a hors d’oeuvre and, as in its culinary counterpart, a precursor to the main dish which, hopefully, will be four excellent collections.
